When recession of the gingiva (“gum”) or inadequate amount of attached gums occurs, the body loses its natural defense against both bacterial penetration and trauma, such as orthodontic movements. When gum recession occurs, or if there is an inadequate amount of attached gum tissue present, gum reconstruction using grafting techniques is an option. The gingival graft procedure is highly predictable and results in a stable healthy band of attached tissue around the tooth. Usually, gingival grafts are performed prior to orthodontic treatment to provide adequate gingival support for tooth movements.
