Occasionally, the quality of the gums surrounding the tooth is inadequate to resist normal function. When this occurs, another type of periodontal plastic surgery may be necessary. This procedure is called a gingival graft where the donor tissue is obtained from the roof of the mouth and then transplanted to the area around the tooth. The result is an improvement in the quality of new tissue which would now be more resistant to future recession.
